Bayesian model checking: A comparison of tests

Two procedures for checking Bayesian models are compared using a simple test problem based on the local Hubble expansion. Over four orders of magnitude, p-values derived from a global goodness-of-fit criterion for posterior probability density functions (Lucy 2017) agree closely with posterior predictive p-values. The former can therefore serve as an effective proxy for the difficult-to-calculate posterior predictive p-values.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysic

Optical conductivity and Raman scattering of iron superconductors

We discuss how to analyze the optical conductivity and Raman spectra of multi-orbital systems using the velocity and the Raman vertices in a similar way Raman vertices were used to disentangle nodal and antinodal regions in cuprates. We apply this method to iron superconductors in the magnetic and non-magnetic states, studied at the mean field level. We find that the anisotropy in the optical conductivity at low frequencies reflects the difference between the magnetic gaps at the X and Y electron pockets. Both gaps are sampled by Raman spectroscopy. We also show that the Drude weight anisotropy in the magnetic state is sensitive to small changes in the lattice structure.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, as accepted in Phys. Rev. Relationship between Binge Eating Disorder and Circadian Chronotype

    Get PDF
Binge eating disorder (BED) is a common condition in the general population and is more common in individuals with obesity. The later timing of food intake has been associated with an increase incidence of obesity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between circadian chronotype and BED in a population of individuals with obesity. The sample consists of a retrospective review of 170 subjects presenting to an obesity medicine clinic who had been clinically evaluated for BED and chronotype. No significant correlation was found between BED and a late chronotype in this population. In a secondary analysis no significant difference in degree of weight loss was related to the presence or absence of BED or an earlier or later chronotype. This retrospective study does not support the relationship of binge eating disorder and circadian chronotype

An Evaluation of the MasterLife Christian Discipleship Program\u27s Influence on the Disciple of Christ

    Get PDF
Important to realize, is the absence of spiritual transformation in the lives of some Christians within the membership of Simon Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The purpose of this study was to discover if the program’s influence on those participants in the experimental group transform into Christlikeness faster than those participants in the control group. This study evaluated transformation of participants in both groups. There were five areas evaluated. These areas included attitudes, behaviors, relationships, ministry, and doctrine. The findings from this study provided credible and convincing evidence which can be used to encourage mass participation in the MasterLife Christian Discipleship Program in this present writer’s local church and local churches throughout the universal church. Therefore, sincere congregational participation in this program should help to minimize the absence of spiritual transformation in the lives of disciples of Christ in this present and all future generations

Fatigue Behavior of a Cross-Ply Metal Matrix Composite at Elevated Temperature under Strain Controlled Mode

    Get PDF
This research extends the existing knowledge of cross-ply metal matrix composites (MMC) to include fatigue behavior under strain-controlled fully reversed loading. This study investigated fatigue life, failure modes and damage mechanisms of the SCS-6-Ti-15-3, [O-9O]2s, MMC. The laminate was subjected to fully reversed fatigue at elevated temperature (427° C) at various strain levels. Stress, strain and modulus data were analyzed to characterize the macro-mechanical behavior of the composite. Microscopy and fractography were accomplished to identify and characterize the damage mechanisms at the microscopic level. Failure modes varied according to the maximum applied strain level showing either mixed mode (i.e. combination of both fiber and matrix dominated modes) or matrix dominated fatigue failures. As expected, higher strain loadings resulted in more ductility of the matrix at failure, evidenced by fracture surface features. For testing of the same composite laminate, the fatigue life under strain controlled mode slightly increased, compared to its load-controlled mode counterpart, using the effective strain range comparison basis. However, the respective fatigue life curves converged in the high cycle region, suggesting that the matrix dominated failure mode produces equivalent predicted fatigue lives for both control modes

Crystal field effects on spin pumping

"Spin pumping" is the injection of spin angular momentum by a time-dependent magnetization into an adjacent normal metal proportional to the spin mixing conductance. We study the role of electrostatic interactions in the form of crystal fields on the pumped spin currents generated by insulators with exchange-coupled local moments at the interface to a metal. The crystal field is shown to render the spin currents anisotropic, which implies that the spin mixing conductance of insulator|normal metal bilayers depends on crystal cut and orientation. We interpret the interface "effective field" (imaginary part of the spin mixing conductance) in terms of the coherent motion of the equilibrium spin density induced by proximity in the normal metal.Comment: 8 pages+, 7 figure
